Hey fellas,

When the term AUW is used, I would imagine that is the weight of the plane with battery and ready to fly? I have seen some AUW's in the area of 16 oz. I guess this would vary greatly with battery setup. Any advice. My first Edge was in the 19 oz range. My second should be slightly lighter.

The weight does vary some but most people get 17-18 with a 1300 size pack so you are on the heavy side but the plane will still fly fine at 21oz.

I am just about done with the new build. Thanks for the info. I didn't shave much off of the first weight, but am much happier with this build (Much cleaner). I am wondering if there are noticable weight differences between motors, packs etc. Anyone have any weights of their packs or motors separately? I will get the weights for the Torque and my Apex 1350 packs.

AUW with my EVO1800 3cell is a whopping 21oz. But it flies absolutely fantastic. Still plenty of punch out of the hover for me...I envy those with 16 and 17oz AUW. My edge is 16oz with out the LiPo - and I build it as light as I could. Squeezed out the epoxy where applied, used Gorilla Glue on the tapered spar, CA and a small epoxy fillet on the wing joint,

I did modify the motor mount - without a weight penalty, and added some checkerboard tripkote (clear/red) that is negligible...so, I'm not sure where I went wrong? Any ideas?

Like what you did with that motor mount!

Thanks, Paul,

Hey, I just wanted to add a word about that motor mount. I have tried my best to rip out that mount with every possible WOT maneuver I can dream up, and it won't budge. The only failure I have had is the joint directly above where the batt is velcro'd where the wing is glued to the fuse (about 1 inch or so) separated - a crack you could say. I squeezed in some foam CA, and mounted the batt at close to the wing as possible to reduce the moment...no further problems. Considering the weight of my Edge540 (21oz - embarrassing, isn't it?) and some of the ugly landings I have had...this is one strong design. My last landing I came down a little hard, the wheels went back a good 3 inches from where it should have been, pretty good bend. No other damage, I popped the gear out, spun it around and did another flight.

The motor mount is cut from 1/8" lite-ply, soaked with thin CA, the mounting screw holes are counter sunk about 1/32" using the button-head screws. Then a thin coat of automotive touch-up paint was applied....it works.

Paul, I've been flying for 17 years, this is by far the best little plane I've ever had (foam or not)...and it could be better if it weren't for the extra 3-4 oz that it mysteriously picked up.

Awesome design!

I wanted to share a pic with you guys from my dad. He is going to be 71 this November, but has been flying with me for about 17 years now. He meticulous and takes his time on everything - there is no throwing it together and getting it in the air as fast as possible with him. Anyway, I think he spent way too much time on his Edge540 over this past Florida winter. On his second flight a fellow 80 year old basically flew his plane right through the Edge... then circled around for a landing...the Edge came down in pieces, many pieces.

I've already asked Paul when an ARF will be available - after ETOC...guess what I'm getting him for an early Fathers Day?

...does the motor mount look familiar???

Just to add insult to injury, the reported weight on his Edge was just 17 oz All Up. He has the TP 1320 PL's
