View Full Version : My new 540 is on its way!

Just received an email from 3DXHobbies confirming my 540 has been shipped.

Sadly, my current Edge 540 is foo-barred :( after a mid air collision with a Train Wagon out the back paddock from a knife edge gone bad.
I could only live with that feeling for 2 days before re-ordering another one from Paul.

I've opted for the Scorpion combo, complete with Vislero lipo.
I'm a steadfast Hacker man, but after a few motor failures over the last cupla months i'm ready to give another brand a go!

Will keep you all posted.

Mick.

p.s. i will post some pics of my 540 to show how amazingly well the old girl took the hit! A bit of C/A and kicker, i am sure she'll be right for another 100+ flights!

Well, i finally finished up my second 540 Build tonight in time for tomorrow mornings fly session!

I really enjoyed this build and am very happy with the way it came it out.

Even your local butcher would hard pressed to beat these fillets! heehee

I used some left-over scrap pieces to make a few 'wiring hatches' for servo leads.

And for the battery connector,

Thanks again Paul for these great planes!
Keep em coming.

Damn..nice fillets!! How did you do those? Very clean. Looks a lot better than my glue job with Gorilla Glue that expanded out between the wing and fuse.

Also, where did you get the red decals for the bipe? I want to get one but I am not keen on the green and I am not that great of a painter.

Nice fleet.

Thanks for the comments.

The fillets are really simple to do once you know how.
After CA'ing the wing into position, i simply lay blue painters tape along the fuse and wing join leaving approx 1/4" gap along the join for the fillet.
Mix up some epoxy with micro balloons and using a 'pop-stick' lay the epoxy along the join and then simply using the rounded end of the popstick drag it along the join making a nice concave fillet. The excess epoxy squeegees out onto the tape.
Peel the tape away and your done!
(Hope that was easy to understand, i will get some pics of the next job i do)

The Bipe decals were painted on using foam paints. (I am no great painter either, so I pretty much stuck with the original layout)

The beauty of dealing with Paulg / AirfoilZ is that he is more than happy to cut the decals in any colors you wish (if you haven't already ordered your kit,
Just put the request in the comment box when you place your order with 3DX)

Cheers

MickWell, I put my lower wing in tonight and used your technique for the fillet and man did it come out nice. Your description was very good and the results were so good it was scary ;)

Thanks for the tip. This looks much better than my Yak with Gorilla Glue expanded out from the wing joint.:(

Also, Thanks for letting me know I could get the bipe in a different color. I was not all that excited about the green.
