We have been receiving countless emails asking for the specs, price and availability of the Hybrid Airfoilz Extra 260 44". Well we have been working on the design and have gone through many proto's and changes, as we were doing all this many of the phone calls and emails, always had the same tone "can I use my 20-20L". So it seams that 44" 260 is not what of the most of you want SO we have redesigned the Extra 260 to a 40" plane! That does not mean that we won't come out with the bigger 44", right now we want to get what the majority want.
So that means you get the great looks and performance of the Yak54 and Edge 540 in a full fuse plane. Please let us know what you think, we plan on making the Yak 54 and Edge 540 in full fuse as well and a few more models.
It's taken so long, and I sorry for the delay, BUT we don't want to just throw junk out to you, we want Airfoilz to be known for being MADE IN THE USA, quality and performance.
Jim V the designer of all the Airfoilz planes, has the new version, done and will be building and testing the new design in a few weeks, and will be rolling it out at the NEAT FAIR.
Thanks,
Paul G

You guys like the 40" form factor?

You guys like the 40" form factor?
It would be nice to have both...I guess the good thing about keeping everything down to the 40"...is there would be more ability to use existing equipment that I know that most of us have laying around! (Motors, ESC and batteries) Is there a big advantage with the extra 4" on the wing?

Yeah I like the 40" form factor. It works good for me. :)

Believe it NO, it's just a bigger plane.

You guys like the 40" form factor?
Fits in the (extended cab) back seat of my truck perfectly, so I can always have it with me. So yeah, 40" works great for me!

Hi Paul:
I'm in favor of the 40" wingspan. Anything larger than a Mobius Pro will not fit in the back of my car.
I would like to see the full fuslage Yak 54. Mine got pretty beat up while I perfected tree landings. That is one tough airplane!
Keep the great kits coming.

I'm anxiously awaiting the release of the new Extra 260.
Anyone know if the mid Oct. release date is still on & if
pre-orders are being accepted?
I've been itching to get my first Airfoilz & figured I'd just wait for the 260 to come out.

Paul,
I'm a newbie to Airfoilz planes & 3D, but not an inexperienced pilot. In your opinion, would you recommend I wait for the new Extra 260 to come out or try the Edge or Yak first. I'm not sure how the 260 will handle in comparison & if it'll be easier or harder to construct.
I'd appreciate your (or anyone else's) advise!

It really depends on a few things; Is this your first 3-D plane? If so I would recommend the Yak...if you want something a little more wild...the Edge. Now for all out 3-D go with the Bipe. I haven't flown the Extra 260 yet;)
The real difference between the 3 is this; The Yak is very stable and easy to fly...The Edge is just wild!! Spins...Tumbles...Awesome! The Bipe is becoming my new favorite...it does take some time getting everything dialed in...and the rudder and elevator are very touchy...but by far the easiest plane to hover. I personally have the Bipe and Edge and look forward to the rest of the fleet...as far as the build...the Yak and Edge would be the easiest...the Extra 260 (I think) will have a balsa subframe so there will be a little extra time in the construction...but none of the Airfoilz planes are hard to build. The biggest keys to success with the Airfoilz Planes are; Take your time. Test Fit and measure before gluing. Go easy on the GLUE...a tab will do;) balance before flying! Other than that...HAVE FUN!:D Here are my two

Thanks for the great advise, Bighead! I see your name in almost every forum here, so assume you're quite active & knowledgeable when it comes to the Airfoilz planes. I see you've got a nice collection too, thanks for the pics! I've heard on another forum that the Yak was actually a bit wilder than the Edge; sounds like you've said the exact opposite is true? Yes, this will be my first 3D plane. I'm not too worried about the constructibility as I've got previous experience building balsa aircraft & assume I'd need similar skills to build an Airfoilz plane (but different glue, of course! :) ).

The was posted by Mikey, he is the pilot of the Edge over the Lake video...he is an incredible pilot!! Take a look!
"which one (yak, edge, and mobius) do you prefer"
There is no good answer to this I like them all for different reasons. I will tell you the good points of all of them and you should be able to decided which is the best fit for you.
The Edge is the best for 3D its tumbles more violently then the yak and has a more responsive feel doing 3D. The precision is the worst out of the three planes not say that it wont Imac it will but when you get into the higher level sequence IE one roll circles it likes to push out. So for basic IMAC it is fine it is the high level moves that you will see the short comings of it. Basic Imac and hardcore 3D the Edge is the ticket.
The Yak is a In between plane it 3Ds well and Imacs well. It just does not 3D quite as well as the Edge or flies precision as well as the Mobius. It flies precision Better than the Edge and 3Ds better than the Mobius. The yak is less sensitive in 3D more forgiving so to speak then the edge. The yak is not quite as responsive and does not tumble quite as well. Not to take anything away from what the Yak is capable of look at the videos it will out 3D any plane it is put up against in its class but not its brother the edge. Imac with Yak is better than the Edge you can fly the advanced IMAC maneuvers with the yak it. It does not groove quite like the Mobius in low wind 5-10 to can fly any IMAC sequence with the Yak. When I grab a plane to fly on a whim this is the one I grab because if I want to get a sequence in I can do it if I want to play it will 3D great.
The Mobius is a purpose built plane it was design to pattern/IMAC fly it does this very well. This is defiantly a IMAC practice plane it groves very well up 15 mph wind you can practice all day with that much wind. This plane it by far is the best at grooving and holding it lines and pattern maneuvers. As far as 3D the mobius will hover, high alfa knife edges, rolling harriers but for 3D that is about it. The long tail moment limits the amount of 3D tumbles that you need for a lot of moves. So as far as 3D I would rate the Mobius as the worst of the group but the best for precision.
No problem! Ask a question and you will get an answer!! Did you check out the "Bipe Build Thread"? Check it out;

I'd seen Mikeys' video & would have to take his opinion as gospel! He is an incredible pilot. It sounds as if the Yak may be the best of the existing Airfoilz planes for my purposes. Thanks for the links to the build & videos, not I'm not going to get ANY work done today!
I see you're from Sacramento; you belong to any local clubs? Sounds like you're good enough to fly from your back yard if you want & don't need a whole field like I do! I live in Elk Grove & just fly in local fields & parks.
Thanks again for your help!

The one difference between the 260 and the Airfoilz profile is durability, if you crash the profile 90% of the time it's fixable, with the Dimensional it's the same as balsa, 20-50% it's not fixable. Airfoilz are more for the performance than the durability, let's face it, if you had a really good flying plane with no bad tenancy verse one that does which will you more likely crash? YEP the balsa one, LOL but Airfoilz are forgiving, just ask Jim, he was NOT a 3-d pilot until he started designing them, and if you see how good he is and ask you will see that learning the 3-d did not require trashing plan after plane.
So chose with your eyes and fly with your heart!

And the nice thing with the Airfoilz Planes...the more you fly them...the less you crash!! That is unless you fly all the way down on the hard deck!! Down low...it is all skill (and a little luck;) )...but even then they hold up well to a little tumble...I find it good to fly low over tall weeds/grass...a little extra cushion! I was new to the 3-D stuff until I came across Airfoilz on the RCgroup site...sure glad I did:D Again...you can't go wrong with any of the Airfoilz kits...there are all just a little different!
PS: Can't wait for the Extra!

Bighead- Do you guys have any specific day or time you're meeting at the park this weekend? I'd like to come by if I can get away from work for a while & see your Airfoilz in action. I live in Elk Grove, though, so it's not exactly "right next door".
On another note . . . I'm not able to view the different color schemes on the 3DX web site while placing my order. Any other place you know of where I can see the color choices? I've seen some cool magenta & black schemes but that isn't an option on the 3DX site. Are those custom schemes?

Normally around 10ish! What time do you normally work on the weekend? What kind of plane/s do you have right now?
Which plane are you looking at on the website? Paul can get cut most colors...you would just have to ask.

I work from my home office most of the time, so can set my own schedule on weekends. I could come out either Saturday or Sunday around 10.
As far as my planes, I started with a Sig Kadet I built many years ago, then dropped out of the hobby. Bought a Hobbyzone Aerobird Challenger to get the feel for it again a couple years ago, then bought a Parkzone Stryker B a year ago. I'm now in the process of building a new Stryker with a brushless motor & an old RCM Basic Trainer balsa kit I'm converting to electric power. Got a couple gliders too & am converting one to electric power.
I was looking at the Yak on the website but couldn't see the additional colors available (maybe a problem w/ my browser?). I've seen a sweet blue & black scheme in addition to the magenta & black scheme- I like both. Maybe I'll take your advise & ask Paul!
Are you running the 1300 lipos or 2100's on your Edge?

Sounds good! Bring them out...it is a really nice park to fly at...even has a decent "runway"
I have seen the Yak in a bunch of different colors...so yes ask Paul to confirm! I was thinking of getting my Yak in the Black and Yellow.
I run 20C 1300 and 2100 on Edge. I like the 2100 better...more power...but now I save the 2100's for the Bipe!;)

I plan on it...Sunday and Monday!! No flying today:mad: Stinking Rain!
The wind had died down a little...thought it was just around 10-15 MPH...was up for about 4-6 Minutes...the wind at about the 100' level was nuts...and WOW did it pick-up:eek:(weather.com listed gusts to 30 MPH:eek: ) The one thing I love about flying in strong wind...I can bring it into the head wind and just hang there!! Landings are very tough...you have to come in hot...and stall it right before it hits the ground...looks like a 6" harrier! Just make sure you are close enough to pick it up before the wind takes it away!! I will be out Sunday as long as it is not rainy...and wind is below 15ish.

That is to bad about your Striker! Was it the B or C?
I was out flying for about 4 hours...4 packs in both my Edge and the Bipe! Really get the hang of them both. I am loving the Bipe more every flight! We too had a few close calls...mid-air crashes;) The wind was picking up but even then the planes were flying great! Which plane are you getting? I had read that others were having good results with the Scorpions and I have as well. Both of my Airfoilz (Edge and Bipe) are powered by the Scorpions. I like the ease of use with their 35amp ESC and that fact that the program card is simple to use. I have at least 60+ flights on my Edge, 25 or so with the Bipe and have not had one compliant. Down the road I might move up to the 3014-18 motor for my Bipe...for a little more power! But for now the 3008-32 is plenty...44.2 ounces thrust on a 25 ounce plane...not to shabby!;)

I've decided to go with the Yak. It sounds best suited to my skill level out of them all. I've heard nothing but good things about the Scorpion motor combo & if their ESC is also user friendly than it's a no-brainer! Glad to hear you're having so much fun with your bipe. Hard not to have fun with almost a 2:1 thrust to weight ratio, huh?!!

Sweet!! I have flown the Yak and it is a blast! Vertical is unlimited...tons of power and will hover at just about 1/2 power. What color did you get? If you have any questions or get stuck building just ask!
And yes the Bipe is a blast...it really flies different compared to anything else I have flown...and if I do move up to the 3014...that motor will produce over 60 ounces of thrust:eek: almost 3 to 1;)

New extra260 picsPaul this looks great! BTW...what power supply will this plane need? I am still building my new Yak right now and I went out flying yesterday and since I did not have my Yak to take I took my EFlite Ultimate FX3D instead as it uses the same batteries as my Yak and I forgot what a piece of crap that plane is. I was hoping I would smash it so I would not have to see it any more.
Anyways, I had switched the Bipe Torque 2830T-1095 to the Torque 2818-900 and I like is so much that I am going to keep in in that plane. I was thinking about getting the Edge as the power system from the Ultimate would be a perfect fit in the Edge but now seeing this plane I was wondering if the Bipe Torque 2830T-1095 motor would power this plane as I have that motor just sitting there now?
If the Torque 2830T-1095 motor would power this, how long before these would be available? I would like it be as powerful as my Yak on the Hacker 20-20L. This set up is really powerful.
Thanks in advance.

Paul this looks great!

The 20-20 on this plane will be about the same as the power on the Yak. This week I am going to get a ton of flights on the airframe and play with defferent motors, props, and batts. My goal is 100 flights by next monday I am off work this week so I plan on speending my time eating, sleeping, and flying.

Mikey,
I assume we're getting close to seeing these. Can we get a list of power systems and props you are recommending. I normally run a 3S-2100/2000 Extreme type pack...and I like lots of watts. My Yaks and Mobius aircraft have ALWAYS come in at exactly 24 oz. (all HS-65HB servoes) Never sure how you guys got anything lighter than that...without throwing in an undersized battery. Thanks!

Yes I will keep everyone updated on all the equipment I use along with weights and how the plane performs on each setup. The plane was designed with all the profiles equipment in mind to be able for everyone to use there existing equipment in this plane.

Christmas for sure it is great to be able to test a product that is the best out there and be one off the first ones to get to play with it.

I don't think power will be an issue it will handle it no propblem it becomes a weight issue we will just have to see how the plane handles the weight. I can tell you this it already flies lighter with the same setup as the edge or the yak. I think we are getting extra lift from the fus being wider than the profiles IDK but it is lighter on the sticks.

Did we get a weight for the Extra yet?
There is a festive feel in the air...can't wait to see the Extra cutting through the sky;)

Should be OK...with a 11X5
Amps - 21.7
Watts - 228
RPM - 7925
Thrust - 44.2 ounces

i guess i could go through the 3 10x5E and get the 11x5 later on =P
props are cheap though, so im still happy!
and yeah, do we get emails telling us when this plane is being shipped?

The smaller 10X5 will give you more top end...less torque! Let us know how it goes.

with 37 oz thrust on a 22-24 oz plane, would i still be able to hover and do crazy 3D?

It will take more throttle to hover...I would say that it will do mild 3-D. Hey at least it is only a prop that will change.
