    Default YAK-54 Wing Assembly

To All, This is my first foam plane and in the process of putting the wing panels together, no were in the manual are their pictures or very clear instructions on how to assemble the wings to the fuse. Can anyone give me some tips on how to successfully assemble the wings to the fuse?

Your manual must be missing a page or three......
I slide my main wing into position (checking it is straight using a tape measure from wing tip to fuse tail tip) and mark the wing against the fuselage with a biro.
I then slip the wing out about 1+1/2" and coat the section thinly with 5 min epoxy and slide back into place using your biro marks as guides.
I am sure others will have other methods that work just as good, but i have built 3 x Airfoilz planes this way, and they all fly sweet as, and not one wing has come loose yet!
Good luck! Your gonna love this plane!

    Thanks Mick,

That makes a little more sense. I assume then, that after inserting the spar, in both wings, it's just a matter of postioning the wings and alignment tabs in the fuse you expoxy the tabs to the other wing and expoxy the wings to the fuse?

I use this method. Assemble the wing completely. When it is all together and all adhesives have cured slip the wing into the fuselage. You may have to make minor adjustments to the cutout in the fuselage. Once in place measure carefully and ensure the wing is properly aligned both horizontally and vertically. Tack glue the wing into position with foam safe CA. Mix 15 minute epoxy with micro balloons and apply a smooth filet both top and bottom of the wing/fuselage joint on both sides. It will never come loose and looks great. Applying epoxy to the wing and sliding it into the fuselage can leave excess residue on one side of the fuselage.

Mick, the vid was just what the doctor ordered!! Is there any more of those vid's on the Yak-54 that I can watch? Again thanks for the great input. I have one more question, what are and, were do I place the 3mm depron vertical stabilizer filler pieces? The instructions state that " I place on either side of the rudder"?

    Thumbs up

Spider, this link will take you to the Video Pages that Paul set up a couple of weeks ago.
    http://www.airfoilz.com/forum/showthread.php?t=172
The section you want to look at is 'Tail Assembly Part 1' which will explain the part about the 3mm depron vertical stabilizer filler pieces.
Download them all, i did and learnt a few secrets along the way!
    Good luck,
    Mick

    Mick,

Thanks again, I found the videos this morning and went through all of them.
What a difference a little visual can do. I sent Paul an e-mail thanking him for the great product and time and money they spent on the vid's. I finshed the wing section and got it all together this afternoon. My motor (hacker 20-20L) ESC (phoenix 25A) powered by Thunder power 3 cell Lipo 1320mah battery should arrive tomorrow. I bought a new radio (DX7) a month ago and will use the new AR6100 receiver to hook my Hiteck hs55's too. Based upon all the reading I've done, this set-up should give me great performance. I'm really anxious now to get the plane all together and enjoy what everyone is talking about....again thanks for your input and leading me to the vid's...hope your up coming winter will allow you to fly your plane as much as I will this summer...take care and keep me posted and anything about the airfoilz you want to pass on.....Spider
